If you have a genuine job offer from a Portuguese employer and you are not an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, Portugal has a residence-visa route for subordinate employment.
The normal sequence is:
Portuguese employment relationship → residence visa → entry into Portugal → AIMA residence permit
The important point is to choose the right employment route before filing. A normal work route, a highly qualified route and the EU Blue Card are not the same thing.
Who is this route for?
This guide covers the general residence route for someone who will work as an employee in Portugal.
It is most relevant where there is an employment contract or genuine promise of employment and the applicant will work under a subordinate employment relationship in Portugal.

Do you need a job before applying?
For the ordinary employment residence visa, the employment relationship is central to the application. The official framework recognises an employment contract or promise of employment.
This is different from the job-seeker route, which has its own procedure.
Ordinary work route or highly qualified route?
A Portuguese job offer does not automatically mean the ordinary work route is the best option.
If the position is highly qualified, a different framework may apply. The analysis can depend on the profession, qualifications, whether the profession is regulated, the employment terms and remuneration.
The EU Blue Card is another separate route for qualifying highly skilled employment.

What documents are normally relevant?
The employment part is normally built around:
- employment contract or promise of employment;
- employer information;
- evidence relevant to the role;
- professional qualifications where required.
The wider residence-visa file can also involve passport and application documents, accommodation, criminal-record documents and evidence of means.
What happens after the visa?
The residence visa is not the residence card itself.
At the AIMA stage, the applicant must show the valid residence visa and evidence of the employment relationship, together with the other residence requirements. AIMA currently asks for an employer declaration confirming the employment link.

If the employer withdraws the offer, the contract ends or a new employer replaces the original employer, the immigration position should be checked before the residence stage.
The key question is whether the facts supporting the visa still match the residence application.
What if you lose the job after receiving residence?
Job loss can affect the evidence needed later and may require a change in immigration strategy.
Possible next steps depend on whether you find another employer, become self-employed, move into remote foreign work or qualify under another residence basis.
